The Kia Niro was introduced in 2016, with both hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains in the compact crossover SUV segment. Now in its second generation, you can get the Niro as a hybrid (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), or an electric vehicle (EV). Here’s how these incredible Kia models compare!
With five trims available, the Kia Niro HEV offers the most versatility for you to choose from. It’s also the most budget-friendly option in the Niro lineup, starting at just $26,940.[1] The money saving doesn’t stop there, either. The Niro’s hybrid engine gets up to 53 mpg in the city and 54 mpg on the highway so you can avoid the gas pump more often.[2]
Inside, your passengers will have a generous and best-in-class 39.8 inches of rear legroom, which is more than a top competitor like the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid. When you fold those rear seats down, you’ll have 63.7 cubic feet of cargo space available. Other standard highlights of this model include a heated windshield and heated rear defrost, Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay®, and 13 driver-assist technologies.
The Kia Niro PHEV is available at two trim levels, starting at $34,390.[1] The benefit of this model is that you get a combination of gas-powered efficiency and electric performance. For example, this plug-in hybrid SUV gets up to 108 MPGe combined and 33 miles of all-electric range.[2]
Convenience features that are standard and available include a Smart Power Tailgate, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and heated side mirrors. Inside, you’ll find standard dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, and a 10-way power driver’s seat with lumbar adjustment. To round it out, the Niro Plug-In Hybrid comes with 17 standard driver-assist safety features.
If you want to ditch gas altogether, go with the all-electric Kia Niro EV. This Niro version also has two trims available, starting at $39,600 for the base Wind model.[1] With the electric motor, you can expect to get an all-electric range of up to 253 miles, meaning you could possibly travel from Akron to Columbus, and then back to Akron, on a single charge.[2]
You can look forward to thrills behind the wheel of the Niro EV, which can deliver 201 horsepower and go from 0-60 mph in 7.1 seconds. There’s also an Onboard Power Generator you can utilize to power things like camping equipment, laptops, and more. Additional highlights of the Niro EV include 20 standard driver-assist technologies, wireless phone charging, remote start, and an available power sunroof.
While each Kia Niro version gets different fuel economy and come with a host of different features, inside and out, they do have some things in common. For example, all 2024 Kia Niro models have room for up to five people. They also all have the option of choosing an exterior that features a Black Aeroblade on the C-pillar for an added touch of design flair.
All new Niro models also offer Kia Connect remote access, which lets you use your compatible smartphone or smart device to perform tasks related to the SUV like locking or unlocking the doors, starting the engine, and more. Other tech similarities include both USB-A and USB-C ports, a 10.25-inch touchscreen display with navigation, and an available Harman Kardon® seven-speaker premium audio system.
