Safety Tips for Driving in Winter Weather

How to Stay Safe through Icy Roads and Snowstorms

Winter is often a very troubling time for driving. You have to contest with slippery roads, fog obscuring your vision, and snow covering road signs and traffic lane markers. Not to mention, you still have to deal with other reckless and bad drivers on the road. It’s incredibly important to stay alert and safe when out on the road when driving in the winter.

Only drive when properly rested.

Make sure all of your tires are properly inflated.

Keep your distance from an active snow plow.

Don’t use your parking brake in the cold or during rain and snow.

Brake sooner and give other vehicles more room to prevent collisions.

Slowly accelerate with the gas pedal, slowly decelerate with brakes.

Do not use cruise control on snow and ice, even when there is salt or sand on top.

Have an emergency kit of tools (flashlight, jumper cables) and supplies (blankets, snacks).

Always keep your fuel tank at least half full to prevent the risk of your gas line freezing.

Check your mirrors and blind spot(s) before changing lanes.

Don’t leave your vehicle running in an enclosed area.

Keep your eyes on the direction your vehicle is moving.

Use All-Wheel Drive and Snow Tires if you can.

Check weather reports to prepare for future trips.

Stay home and off the road when possible.

Finally, and most importantly, it’s very critical to have your car checked out. Even if your vehicle has been previously running fine, something might not be apparent right away and can worsen over time, especially in the freezing cold. Whether you have any major or minor problems, you’ll want them found and fixed before the weather gets worse. So, don’t wait, call and make an appointment today!
