Tackling these hazards can be difficult without being properly prepared, something we’re more than aware of! That said, we’re here to help! Continue reading below to see what tips we have for you!
1. Increase Your Following Distance
You should make sure that you increase the following distance that you’re employing on the road, as you don’t want to re-end someone due to poor road conditions. Typically, you follow a vehicle at around 3-4 seconds of distance, but for winter we recommend you increase that distance to 5-8 seconds depending on road conditions.
2. Check the Weather Beforehand
Before making any trip no matter the distance you should check the expected weather. You want to make sure that you don’t drive somewhere far, or even nearby while expecting a winter storm or similar. Be sure you keep the weather in mind before you head out!
3. Prepare Your Vehicle for Winter
There are many ways to prepare your vehicle for winter but two that we recommend you employ first are getting your brakes replaced to assure maximum safety as well as having your oil changed to winter grade. You generally want to change your oil to 5W-30 to have the best possible performance in winter. And additional vehicle preparation tip is that you replace the tires for more winter-grade ones.
